About Somerlea Park Junior School redevelopment

The proposed redevelopment is a new build project rather than a refurbishment of the existing buildings.  The new school is proposed to be constructed within part of the existing playground with the existing school buildings demolished once the new facility has been completed.  The area currently occupied by the existing school buildings would be integrated into a larger area of outdoor space for the children to use.

The Somerlea Park Junior School site is owned by the County Council but leased by The Learners Trust who now have the responsibility for the running of the school. The proposed replacement school building would be designed to accommodate up to 240 pupil places which is the same as the maximum capacity of the existing school.

In addition to the school, the County Council owns the adjacent library building.  The Public Library is open to the public for 2 hours, 4 times a week.  The County Council has requested that the existing library on the site is retained in its current location.

There will be some refurbishment works required to the library which will be limited to utility connections, upgrading of fire alarms or other services where necessary and making good after surrounding demolition and other minor works
